We’ve been very fortunate to have met and interviewed some of the best and most well-known experts in the world of homeschooling and alternative education. Here’s a list of some of the people we interviewed for the film:

Pat Farenga
Pat FarengaPatrick Farenga worked closely with homeschool pioneer, John Holt, for four years until Holt’s death in 1985. He is the President of Holt Associates Inc. and was the Publisher of Growing Without Schooling magazine (GWS) from 1985 until it stopped publishing in Nov. 2001. GWS was the nation’s first periodical about homeschooling, started by Holt in 1977.In addition to writing for GWS for twenty years, he’s the author of The Beginner’s Guide To Homeschooling and Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling.

Linda Dobson
Linda DobsonLinda Dobson is the author of eight books about education and is an international speaker on education issues. As a former news analyst for a national magazine for nine years, she has experience in investigative journalism. Diane Flynn Keith
Diane Flynn KeithDiane Flynn Keith is the Editor-In-Chief of Homefires.com, a website devoted to kindling a life-long love of learning and empowering parents around the world to help their children get a meaningful education at home.Diane is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in education outside the traditional classroom walls. Lisa Nielsen
Lisa NielsenLisa Nielsen writes for and speaks to audiences worldwide about the future of education. She’s frequently covered in the media for her views on “Passion (not data) Driven Learning,” “Thinking Outside the Ban” to harness the power of technology for learning, and using the power of social media to provide a voice to educators and students.Ms. Nielsen is a  certified teacher and educational administrator at the NYC DOE and Columbia University to support learning in real and innovative ways. In addition to her blog, The Innovative Educator, her writing is featured in places such as the NY Times and the Huffington Post. She’s the author of the book Teaching Generation Text.
Sandra Dodd
Sandra DoddFor 20 years Sandra Dodd has been involved in learning about the potential of unschooling to improve lives. With two books, weekly chats, and a daily-inspiration blog, her ideas are shared in many ways.Sandra is a former English teacher whose other jobs have all involved words, ideas and learning, and whose avocation is helping other parents find ways to live more richly and peacefully with their children. Sandra maintains an online collection of writings, notes, examples, and great quotes collected from over 15 years of online discussions.

Laurie A. Couture
Laurie Couture Laurie A. Couture is an Attachment Parenting and unschooling coach, public speaker and the author of Instead of Medicating and Punishing: Healing the Causes of Our Children’s Acting-Out Behavior by Parenting and Educating the Way Nature Intended.In March 2012, Laurie was a guest on the Anderson daytime show, hosted by Anderson Cooper. She was also featured as an expert in the documentary film, The War On Kids (2009).

Dale Stephens

Jerry Mintz
Jerry MintzJerry Mintz has been a leading voice in the alternative school movement for over 30 years. In addition to his seventeen years as a public school teacher and a public and independent alternative school principal, he has also founded several alternative schools and organizations and has lectured and consulted around the world.In 1989, he founded the Alternative Education Resource Organization. He continues to serve as AERO’s director and as the Managing Editor of AERO’s networking magazine, The Education Revolution. Jerry was also Editor-in-Chief for the Handbook of Alternative Education, and the Almanac of Education Choices. He is the author of No Homework and Recess All Day: How to Have Freedom and Democracy in Education and is editor of Turning Points: 35 Visionaries in Education Tell Their Own Story.

  1. I really think you should re-consider Dayna Martin as #1, she was never at the forefront of the Unschool movement and #2 and most importantly, she has been widely discredited and is in the midst of a scandal of fraud, substance abuse and deception, within the Unschooling Community.
